Rakefet Anzi is a PhD student in the Department of Jewish History and Contemporary Jewry. Her dissertation, supervised by professors Yifat Weiss and Dan Porat, is titled "Imparting the Hebrew Language to Adults in Mandatory Palestine and the State of Israel, 1936–1955.” Examining the efforts of the pre-state and state establishment to teach Hebrew to adult immigrants from the 1930s through the 1950s, this research highlights the role language had played in the shaping of Hebrew national culture. While Hebrew language education for children has been the subject of extensive study, the practice of imparting Hebrew to adults has been rarely studied. By focusing on adults, this dissertation reveals the ways in which pre-state and state institutions contended with the intellectual, cultural, and spiritual worlds that adult immigrants had brought with them.Complementing this network are the "literacy events" in which learning took place, Anzi’s analysis of Hebrew textbooks for adults, and her tracing of the supervisors and teachers involved in these educating adults.
